Effective Problem Solving

Workshop Aim

This module equips supervisors with the skills necessary to analyse and solve day-to-day problems that they experience in the work place. It places emphasis on proactive anticipation and prevention as well as on solution orientation. The focus is on getting the supervisor to examine the underlying causes of problems and not to jump into addressing superficial symptoms, or surface problems.

Competency Outputs

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the nature and sources of problems in their unit
  • Simple and complex cause analysis techniques to analyse problems
  • Use an interactive problem-solving process to tackle work problems
  • Anticipate and prevent problems in the work place
  • Use basic brainstorming and lateral thinking techniques to develop the best solutions to problems

  • What is a problem - its nature and source
  • Five step problem-solving process
  • Cause analysis techniques - including cause-effect diagramming
  • Problem anticipation and prevention
  • Brainstorming technique for group problem solving
  • Creative thinking for problem resolution

Methodology

The methodology used in this module includes a problem solving simulation; interactive presentations; group discussions; real-time problem-solving exercises.

Target Audience: Employees who need supervisory training.
Module Duration: 5 - 8 hours, dependent on the level of the group
