Delegation for Supervisors

Workshop Aim

Delegation Is one of the fundamental skills of supervising. Its function is to develop team members as well as to free up the supervisor to focus on the leadership roles required. However, many supervisors find this a challenging aspect of the role for three main reasons:
  • Promotion to a supervisory position is usually a result of high skill in a job - not necessarily due to people management ability
  • The relinquishing of control can be intimidating due to feeling "if I don't do it myself, it won't be done properly".
  • Supervisors are frequently measured on the results they achieve, not the development of their teams

Competency Outputs

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the need for and benefits of Delegation
  • Identify and clarify the type of tasks and activities that are appropriate for delegation
  • Identify possible barriers to effective delegation and plan strategies for overcoming them
  • Apply a set of Delegation guidelines and communication principles to delegation situations
  • Ensure that team members are adequately prepared to accept a delegated task or activity

Methodology

A combination of interactive presentations, group discussions, practical exercises and real time learning allow the delegate to develop their skills.

Target Audience: All professionals who need to effectively manage a team.
Module Duration: 1 Day
